Recent work by Alex Drummond illustrator

Recent illustration work, some dungeon art for book interiors. Its been a little while since my last update, been working on more books and film pitch material for companies in the US. Ultimately i want to work fulltime in games again but for now the freelance life is pretty good. I'm thinking about packing up and moving to the UK in the coming months to search for more permanent employment, its the perfect time to do it as I'm between jobs and still have an income from illustration work. I'll update with a whole load of new art when i get permission to show it from publishers. For now here is this new one.

I'm looking foward to my hardcover copy of the new shadowrun 20th anniversary edition book as i have several illustrations in there, by all accounts the art looks great in print so i'm very happy.

Newborn contest entry

Conceptart.org's new contest made me realy get into an image i enjoyed making.

"I wanted to bring something into the world, and then make it attack a peaceful futuristic society!!!!"

fluff inspiration: A seething biomass of activity, the concept of a biological machine unforgiving and always changing, a race of creatures constantly evolving to be the better predator in each new environment they encounter.A creature capable of devouring metals that then become its armoured shell, of liquefying organic matter as food for its spawn pods. Each creature has different predatory traits. which makes it an even harder foe to combat, how do you defend against a constantly changing enemy. "Like a turbulent wind they swept our world."

sketch revival

I've been slack lately in my sketching, work consists of hours and hours on the cintiq photoshoping all week. I think i need to get back to some basics with afew paintings and some traditional pencil HB 2B sketching sessions. To save some cash i've been making my own sketchbooks out of recycled printing a4 paper that i clip into a bundle useing a buffolo clip, for 5 bucks you can get 500 pages, now thats value, the pages can be uncliped and easily scanned or put into order just by removing the clip and rearanging.
Work is going well, i've done some of my best work to date over the past 2 months, getting alot of props polished to the finished level, i cant show any as they are all under NDA for a while longer.
I've been reinspired by the anouncement of Diablo 3 and seeing the standard of their work has been an aweing experience.
so its my decision to get back to sketching over the next few months, characters and monsters, my two weakest areas. I'l throw some sketches up here when i scan them.

The Art Crusades (wheres my loots)

what started as a small idea between me and another artist on irc chat at conceptart has turned into something extraordinary. "The Art Crusades" started as a vs match between me and chaos on the conceptart.org forums, but we decided to give it a bit of a twist and recruited afew people to draw on my team and a couple of people on her team- so we got a handfull of people to pick either the light side or the dark side, with me and chaos incharge of a side each.

so i go to bed and when i wake up we got afew requests to join in on the weird team deathmatch vs competition, so me and chaos chose a topic of lord of the forrest, with each team putting their own spin on their images. so i go to sleep again

the next day i thought, hey lets make this abit of an ongoing thing with a battle map that each team art battels over territory, so we drew up a battle map and set more topics,
but we needed some representation of the team,

so we had a little think about it and decided to have a list, wich turned into a player inventory.

each player now has individual rankings within the art crusade along with loot collected that can go toward ranks.
but we needed something elce too, so i made the headhunters guild within the main crusade for people to individualy duel amongst themselves.

so by this time davi one of the conceptart.org admins decided we had a good thing going and we got our very own sub forum to run the now massive ongoing art crusade.

with over 100 ranks over 12 tiers to acheive through your art, head hunting, epic loots team deathmatch it has become a crazy combination of art battle rpg/ dueling/ craziness.

End of workshop

well, i have to say the seattle workshop was the best learning experience, the most fun and allround the best holiday i've ever had. Met a ton of contacts and freinds, the sheer standard of the attendees work was amazing.

There was a free spot in the instructors thunderdome so they asked for any volenteers, i raised my hand thinking a hundered people would also be raising their hands but me and another dude were the only ones, so i got the spot.

The topic was "the dream eater" had 2 hours to get something done, sounds easy until you realise theres afew hundered people over your shoulder, including all the top people in the industry. I made it into round 2 and it came down to yours truly, Jason Chan and Andrew Jones and thats as far as i got. Chan took out the prize but i cant be happier i got to draw in the event.

The workshop exceeded all my expectations on every level and i cant wait to get back to work and rock out with some of the new knowledge i've picked up.

cheers

On the road

Heading out of town tonight to start the big trip, starting with the problem of getting to brisbane airport in time to get onto my flight. You see the brisbane government decided it would be a good idea to regulate traffic in high trafic areas by installing 8 sets of traffic lights on one of the buisiest stretches of road in brisbane. Thereby turning what should be a 25 min trip into something like 2 hours. They put traffic lights around a massive roundabout just outside of the airport,, why did they do this ? who the fuck knows.

I'm a cautious person by nature so i booked a taxi last night to be outside my house at 4 pm as the traffic starts backing up by about 3:30 i know its going to be a headache. but if i miss the plain i wont be happy. cant think of what elce i could have done to get there earlier.

ok what elce has been happening, youtube vids have been going realy well, getting alot of views and afew subscribers out of it, the latest video is me doing an ambi drawing, for those who dont know , an ambi drawing is the same as a regular drawing but the artist uses both hands similtaniously whilst sketching with 2 pencils. i've allways been able to do it so i dont think its that weird, but i must admit watching it over i cant realy figure out how one hand can seem to be doing something completly stand alone compared to the other one. its like drawing a circle with one hand and a square with the other. Ambi is short for ambidexturous.

got over 1900 hits in a couple of days so thats promising. every sketch that gets put up increases the total view amound by about 450 because people watch more than one vid once they get to the page. Also i'm updating threads with the list of videos at my regular forums and trying to get cross polination of people from all sites to get back to my youtube page where the new vids go.

I've got the pipeline sorted now for producing a sketch and getting it online, i can do 3 part sketches and have them compressed and uploaded within 3 hours and i've done 13 so far, the first few are me trying to figure out how to use the programs and increase quality, by the latest video i've sorted out most issues. The camera works very well for what i bought it for.

last man standing 3

Ok i entered into the last man standing competition over at conceptart.org, basicly it starts with 370 people or so and that amount gets witteled down over afew rounds until there is a winner. sounds easy right ? nope unfortunatly theres abit of a hitch that alot of the people in the competition are crazy good artists and they are probably going to wipe the floor with my messy art style.
Although today was a good day, got some solid ideas to start with for the round one illustration, the theme this round is "Underneath It All" i'l post the thumbs up when i get back to work once they are developed a little. Got a good feeling about the colours and scale so far.
so keep a look out over the next few weeks for me stressing out about cleaning up my art to get it to that all important finished level.

The plan

Ok heres the plan, january 4,5,6,7 in 08 i'm heading to seattle for the concept art workshop to meet with people i've known for like 4 years online. The workshop looks insane, the instructor list alone will gaurentee a sold out event. How much is this little adventure going to cost ? about 4 grand looks like, return flights from australia. ya.
But i'l get most of it back in tax because its a travel expence for work, on my pay slip i'm concept artist so concept art workshop should fall under work- i'd pay anyway realy, any money i get back is just a bonus. So i've sorted out a new wacom, a decent laptop, and a spare battery, although i'd love it if they had power sockets at the event.

Why am i going halfway across the world for an art workshop ? because i remember the sinking feeling in my stomach when i was watching the footage from the last workshop and thinking.. thats where its happening, what am i doing here and not there. It was one of those moments that i'l regret forever , that i never made it to the last workshop. But not this time.

i may need a couch to crash on in seattle if anyone can help :) i can pay you with stories and alchahol.

Starting a painting

When starting a painting i'l block out the space, look for interesting shapes, something that feels cool and most importantly i'l look for something i want to draw within the shapes.

i'm spending all of today on this image so lets see what we get.
